You Cannot Heal What You Cannot Feel
As humans, we tend to look for the easy way out, yet that is rarely the best way; especially when you are dealing with heartbreak and grief. Recently, I read an article that stated "To get back to who you were, you have to release your desire to be numb. You must be willing to be miserable." Your power to heal lies in your vulnerability and your willingness to be with the pain. Wow! That is NOT what I wanted to hear! I think most of us find alternative ways to deal with pain. Some of us keep so busy we don't have "time" to think about it (that would be me). Some turn to drugs or alcohol. Others shop (yes, even shopping can be a coping mechanism). These things may help us feel better for a time, but it doesn't address the underlying problem. Most of us are afraid to feel. Pain is real, and unless we address it, we cannot heal. And healing takes time. Realize that what you are feeling is normal. Emotional pain can be just as devastating as physical pain. Take time to identify what you are feeling and take steps to work through it. Take time out for yourself. Spend time with friends and do things that you enjoy. You may feel like pulling away from others and isolating yourself, but you will need the support of friends and family. People may not know exactly what you are going through, but they don't need to. What you need is a listening ear and a bit of compassion. Everyone goes through the pain of loss in one form or another. It is a normal, yet difficult part of life. Remember, that just because things may look bleak right now doesn't mean they will stay that way forever. You WILL get through it, and you will have gained experience that will prepare you to help someone else on down the road.
