What is "backwards"?

I was getting tired of buying battery operated pencil sharpeners that would quit working after a couple months, so I got a manual one that suctions to the table. Jayden wanted me to show her how to use it. I set it up, then realized that she's left handed. I set it up on the table, put the pencil in and showed her how to turn the handle. She looked at it and then turns to me and says, "do I turn it this way (toward herself), or backwards?". I almost laughed. Her "backwards", was what I considered to be normal. How many times do we go through life doing things a certain way without ever considering that others may have a completely different perspective?
